To distaff or not to distaff? (Or, ARGH my fiber keeps catching in the twist!)

Spinning with a spindle is nice and portable (and cheaper than buying a spinning wheel), but there are some problems. For instance, if it is windy, or you have a fan on, or you look at your fiber in the wrong light… the fiber you haven’t yet spun can catch in the twist of the fiber you are currently spinning, and then you make a sadface. Cleverly, there is a solution to this problem! It’s called a distaff.

A distaff is something that holds your unspun fiber away from the bits you are spinning. Of course, carrying around a big old stick with you kinda defeats the purpose of a portable method of spinning, so we’ve got other ways of doing it. The easiest and most portable way for a spindle spinner is a pouch that goes around the wrist to hold your fiber.

Now, having something hanging down from your wrist while you’re working might irritate some of you (as it does me), or maybe you don’t have the supplies or skills around to whip up a quick hangy pouch. Here’s my (very ghetto) solution to both problems!

Behold…

The Incredible Nylon Arm-Hugging Distaff Pouch!

I cannibalized a pair of pantyhose (they were already pulled and ruined from being thrown accidentally into the wash) to make this. Details can be found on the Tutorial Page I just whipped up: Pantyhose Distaff Pouch Tutorial.
