New Sock Bases
There are a multitude of sock yarn bases out there; which ones are the best? I’ve been playing around with some new bases over the past few weeks. Here are my sock yarn conclusions!
It really depends on what you want. I’ve become enamored of three new bases in particular. They’re all available in the Shop now. The three new bases are Luscious, Shortcake, and Sockolate Mousse. All three are superwash, and they have unique properties.
Luscious

Luscious is a two-ply merino/nylon sock yarn that takes up dye gorgeously and has a lovely shine. It’s tightly twisted and a fairly dense yarn; 100 grams is 400 yards of fingering weight.
Shortcake

Shortcake is probably my personal favorite, as it is highly squooshable and sproingy. It’s a 100% merino yarn from a fairly local mill. I can’t wait to knit socks out of it for myself! The ply twist is pretty tight and it blooms beautifully when I dye it. It’s the thickest of the sock yarns while in the skein, but that’s because it’s so squishy. It has a wonderful memory, too; it springs back immediately when I squish it.
Sockolate Mousse

Sockolate Mousse is the softest, smoothest sock yarn of the three. It’s a lovely MCN that sucks up dye, but displays colors beautifully if you give it enough. Fans of cashmere socks that are still durable will love this base. The texture is smoother than the other two, and the ply twist isn’t quite as tight. It’s the thinnest of the sock yarns, though the size is comparable to Luscious. It’s just not as dense, so it makes a light, soft sock. I think this yarn would be perfect for a shawlette, and I intend to dye some up for a shawl project later this year!
